When is car sharing better than owning?

Car sharing has been around for a long time in Europe, the US and across the globe. It has different forms and works a little differently everywhere; however, generally it is charged by the hour or by the minute. It also includes a processing fee or membership fee to keep per-minute costs lower. GoTo charges a €7.00 fee per month and €0.28 per minute for driving the cars.

When you do your sums, of course, car sharing is not for everyone. However, just because it’s not for you does not mean it will not have a positive impact on your driving in the long term. In many countries car sharing has resulted in between 4 - 10 cars reduced from the streets for each shared car. But I can hear you say… with these prices, who is car sharing for exactly?

Car sharing is ideal for sharing (surprising, isn’t it?)

If you’re a student and want to get to university without too much trouble for your mid-morning lecture, you could get together with some friends and share – for example, a 25 minute journey would cost €1.40 if shared with 4 friends (by 5 people). That’s cheaper than a bus and you don’t have to wait for a bus or carry your heavy books all the way.

Similarly, if you’re all going to the same destination on a Saturday night and then catching a taxi back separately later, using a GoTo car is ideal and will cost less.

It’s ideal for motorbike, bicycle and scooter owners

If you go to work on foot or anything with two wheels to beat the traffic and only use your car when it rains or when you need to carry stuff, then car sharing will save you the extra expense of also owning a car. You don’t need to worry about getting bulky errands done because GoTo will be there for you when you need it. If you only need a car once or twice a week to run errands, the cost of using a GoTo car will be far cheaper than buying your own, getting insurance, servicing the car, paying for parking, washing, fuel and all the other expenses to keep your car running.

It’s ideal if you share a car with your husband or wife

If you only own one car and sometimes you both need it at the same time, GoTo will be there on those occasions when you’re stuck for an alternative. People in this situation really benefit from using car sharing services. Having one car per household and sharing it is a good way of balancing finances with convenience. If people choose GoTo services in-stead of buying more cars for each household and get used to the idea of sharing cars, we will achieve our goal of reducing congestion, pollution and traffic on our roads.
